Welcome to the home of Drava timber rafters, in the tourist village Javnik. Eleven rafters from the Šarman family give character to this wonderful profession, which marked the valley and its people throughout the centuries. Franc Šarman – called “King of Drava rafters” navigated the river Drava and Danube with his congenital senses. His home in Javornik is now a rafting museum.

Then we travel toward the oldest hydroelectric power plant on the river Drava and the wider area – HPP Fala. The construction started in 1913, and in 1918 it began its operation with the first five aggregates. The renewed power plant is still operating and for visitors a monumental space of the original machine room with the preserved horizontal Francis turbines is arranged. The renovated turbine with partially opened turbine cover provides insights into the mode of operation of the plant and the process of changing water energy into electrical energy.

Tour Details

When the fourth generation in the family šarman rafts down the Drava River…

The raft »TALJANŠEK« is constructed according to our granddads’ designs. By now, we are the first and the only one who has got the German LLOYD Certificate SAFE VESSEL. The 100-sq. meter raft accepts over 70 persons (seats). We raft with two such rafts and can carry over 100 passengers at the same time. The passengers on the raft are protected against unfavorable weather conditions by an appropriate roof.

After timber rafting, we will visit the FALA HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANT MUSEUM »National cultural monument«. As part of the renewed hydroelectric power plant, which is still operational today, the original machine house with the fully preserved turbine is displayed. This enables an insight into how the power plant transformed the energy of the water into electricity.

What to Expect

The rafting agenda:

First reception on the raft with bread, salt, and aperitif served by the rafter’s »lasses«. Also, rafter’s snacks (goulash, hard-boiled corn mush and homemade rye bread) are provided and rafter’s coffee from an open fireplace. We also have a presentation of the traditional rafter’s baptism with the acceptance of the »nuisance« into the rafting guild and rafter’s musician plays on a diatonic accordion.

Fala hydroelectric power plant museum:

The original power of the first Drava hydropower plant in 1918 was 20 MW (5 aggregates of 4 MW) and only in 1932 was finally upgraded with two aggregates of 7 MW, which increased power to 34 MW. Today’s power of HE Fala is 58 MW.

At the beginning of the operation, it was equipped with horizontal Francis turbines, where two turbine runners were installed in one housing. Three aggregates are being operated today with a vertical Kaplanovo turbine.

The strongest power plant of its time was built in such a way that the engine room with the aggregates was positioned at the left Brežino and the riverbed was built in a stream of streams and at the right Brežina raft.
